The residential accommodation is really a problem in all most all the islands for the employees since sufficient local private houses are not available to take it on rent.  In addition to the construction of quarter at islands, action is on hand for the construction of the transit accommodation at Kochi, Delhi, Mangalore and Calicut to meet the requirement of local people and officials. The Lakshadweep Public Works Department has been constructing residential buildings for the employees of U.T. Administration in islands and at Kochi.  The requirement is not fully met with so far and therefore it is proposed to continue the construction of residential quarters.  Geographical area of whole Lakshadweep is 32 Sqkm.  Average land area of each island is around 3 Sqkm. Situation being this, there is a limitation for housing activities.  It is proposed to demolish all single storied building which have out lived its life and construct double storied buildings in its place in a phased manner. At present percentage satisfaction (average) is 40%.  An amount of Rs: 417.00 Lakhs is allocated during the year 2003-04.                                              

The quarters in the islands are normally allotted to the employees under the administration who are    working away from their home islands.  There is a Local Accommodation Board which allots the quarters. Details of residential buildings constructed in various islands are shown below.
